It's a guilty pleasure, not in the middlebrow conception of the term, but in a radical, almost interactive sense: The reader, assuming the implicated vantage of the avid voyeur, cannot help suffering a twinge of complicity. Weekly Not for the squeamish this sick, hilarious fictional excursion into the depths of hustler fantasy is for readers who appreciate Cooper s brilliant ability to dig truthfully into depravity.--Dennis Lim, Village Voice Cooper deserves reassessment, but until an Oprahesque crossover occurs, this compelling page turner ought to remind adventurous readers that important transgressive literature needn't be something only the French and the occasional perverted American can get behind. A paper edition was published in October by Carroll & Graf, but it's not as handsome as Void Books' original signed, limited edition. This book, too, features a dead boy—or at least the fantasy of one.The title men are denizens of a Web chat site that reviews the performance of hustlers such as Brad, a blond who looks like an angelic teen but is probably older, and who may or may not have been killed, or snuffed, by a john. Brad's passivity drives a certain type of dominant to distraction, and Brad gets rave after rave review, rendered by Cooper with deadpan perfection. It may be too confusing sometimes, or pretty mean/sad (a few times I got tears on my eyes), but just keep reading...me was more than worthy, can't imagine my life without reading it..I grew up reading Dennis Coopers "George Myles Cycle" in high school and was always in love with his writing but I have to say going back it is hard to tell if the writing is written in this 'punk' way because it tells the story effectively or just because he's a bad writer and this is all he can muster. She can't restrain her sexual appetite and gives herself to several men of the village.Shai, a young veterinary, just moved in the region and soon falls under the spell of Tamar.
Also Dennis Cooper's blog is pretty goddamn great so I highly recommend looking into that as well, except when he does those escort ads thing. Not really, but I would tell someone about it without saying anything negative about it. To me the sexual content was pretty trite and mundane, so it all read like a sort of Nancy Drew mystery. sorry to say there really is filthy gutter rich psycho trash out there; predators which with there money, and out of control feed on hopeless children.
The eerie matter-of-factness with which all of this is discussed is what makes this neo-epistolary novel fascinating, and certainly the best extant work on extreme queer s&m Internet culture in any genre.
